I am very concerned about the relocation of the Kealakehe Greenwaste site to Puuanahulu and the impact on Kona residents if the hours or days of being permitted to drop off green waste at Kealakehe are curtailed. This is a very distinct possibility. Although Lono Tyson, the outgoing Environmental Management Director has stated that it was never the intent to close it down, he has also said that services that can be provided there after the move up north are subject to funding and will have to be reduced.
I feel that any R.F.P. that is issued for a five-year contract at Puuanahulu should include specific provisions to keep the Kealakehe drop-off site open several times a week and to truck the green waste up to the new site. I also feel that a bona fide survey needs to be done of current users to determine the level of commercial and residential use. Independent gardeners dropping off waste for one or two individual residences should not be considered in the "commercial" category and should be able to drop off at Kealakehe or they will not be able to make a living.
Residents can testify at the Environmental Management Commission meeting this coming Wednesday, March 24th, at 9 a.m. in the Kailua-Kona County Council offices located in the Kailua Trade Center at 75-5706 Hanama Place, suite 109. Lono Tyson will be there and suggested that we attend to express our concerns.
