LITTLE FIRE ANTS HAVE SPREAD TO KONA
FROM EAST SIDE OF HAWAI`I ISLAND
HONOLULU — The Hawai`i Department of Agriculture (HDOA) has confirmed that an invasive stinging ant called the Little Fire Ant (LFA) has spread from the east side of Hawai`i Island to the west side. LFA (Wasmannia auropunctata) was detected earlier this month at two locations in Kailua-Kona. One site is a residence and the other is a holding yard for a landscaping firm, which may have been infested for about two years according to the owner. State entomologists believe that it is likely that there may be other unreported locations that are infested in West Hawai`i.
Originally from South America, LFA is considered among the world’s worst invasive species.
LFA are tiny ants, measuring 1/16th inch long, are pale orange in color and move slowly. They can produce painful stings and large red welts and may cause blindness in pets. They can build up very large colonies on the ground and in trees and other vegetation and completely overrun a property. They will also freely move into homes.
The first detection of LFA in Hawai`i was in the Puna area in 1999. Surveys determined that LFA appeared to have been on the west side for several years prior to their initial detection and was widely distributed in Puna. Attention was then focused on controlling ant populations and preventing the spread to uninfested areas on the island and to other islands.
In October 2009, LFA was detected on a farm in Waihee, Maui. Eradication efforts at that site appear to have contained the infestation, which is being continually treated with pesticides. This eradication effort will continue for at least nine months to ensure eradication. HDOA staff has also trained Maui County employees, the Maui Invasive Species Committee (MISC) and private pest control operators on Maui to assist in recognizing and reporting possible infestations on the island. MISC is also assisting HDOA in conducting surveys at high-risk areas on Maui. So far, there have been no other detections of LFA on Maui.
Attached is an HDOA Pest Advisory that contains information on LFA and its history in Hawai`i.
(Also available on the department’s website at: http://hawaii.gov/hdoa/pi/ppc/npa-1/npa99-02-lfireant.pdf ).
Suspected LFA or other stinging ants should be reported to:
HDOA Hawai`i Island Office – 974-4140
HDOA Maui Office – 873-3962
Or to the State’s toll-free PEST HOTLINE at 643-PEST (7378).

The Supreme Court Decision from Cheryl King
(Please forgive me for intruding on your personal space. Because of your political activism, I thought you might be interested in learning about measures that one congressman is trying to take to counter the recent Supreme Court decision. I have received e-mails from some of you in the past or if you are wondering how I got your address, I copied it from a message sent by someone who left your e-mail address in plain sight. ) Sincerely, Cheryl King (Kailua-Kona)

We need to stop the corporate takeover of our electoral process.
Your message to President Obama and the Congressional leadership:
We cannot have a government that is bought and paid for by huge multinational corporations. We need a government of the people, by the people, and for the people. I support Rep. Alan Grayson's "Save Our Democracy" platform. Put the full power of your office behind these six simple reforms to stop corporations from taking over our democratic process.
Dear Cheryl,
President Obama will deliver the State of the Union address tonight. As he does so, we ought to confront the fact that our system of government faces a grave crisis.
We deserve a country where our elected officials are not bought and paid for by Big Business. But last week's Supreme Court decision in the case Citizens United vs. FEC overturned over a century of precedent and opened the floodgates for unlimited amounts of corporate money to flow into our political system. Shockingly, the court's decision may even allow foreign corporations and large multinationals to manipulate our elections.
Progress on any issue we care about depends upon our ability to stop the corporate takeover of our electoral process. If we do nothing, this ruling has the potential to undermine the very foundation of our democracy.
Click here to automatically sign our petition to President Obama and the Congressional leadership telling them they must enact strong laws to save our democracy from the pernicious influence of corporate money.http://act.credoaction.com/campaign/grayson_democracy/
Representative Alan Grayson has been one the most forceful voices in responding to this crisis. He has introduced a number of bills as part of a "Save Our Democracy" initiative to blunt some of the worst implications of the Supreme Court's decision.
1. The Business Should Mind Its Own Business Act (H.R. 4431): Implements a 500% excise tax on corporate contributions to political committees, and on corporate expenditures on political advocacy campaigns.
2. The Public Company Responsibility Act (H.R. 4435): Prevents companies making political contributions and expenditures from trading their stock on national exchanges.
3. The End Political Kickbacks Act (H.R. 4434): Prevents for-profit corporations that receive government money from making political contributions, and limits the amount that employees of those companies can contribute.
4. The Corporate Propaganda Sunshine Act (H.R. 4432): Requires publicly traded companies to disclose in SEC filings money used for the purpose of influencing public opinion, rather than for promoting their products and services.
5. The Ending Corporate Collusion Act (H.R. 4433): Applies antitrust law to industry PACs.
6. The End the Hijacking of Shareholder Funds Act (H.R. 4487): This bill requires the approval of a majority of a public company's shareholders for any expenditure by that company to influence public opinion on matters not related to the company's products or services.
Without these types of laws, it will be even harder for candidates and elected officials to stand up to Big Business. Even before the decision, we too often saw the interests of Main Street subverted in favor of the interests of Wall Street. But with the Citizens United decision now the law of the land, large corporations have the power to spend unlimited amounts of money from their general treasuries to buy elections.
To put things in perspective, the roughly $745 million Barack Obama raised to run for President (which was the most money raised by any candidate ever to run for office in the U.S.) is dwarfed by the $45 billion in profits a single company (ExxonMobil) made in 2008.
We have heard that the Democratic leadership in the House and the Senate will be deciding in the next few weeks upon a legislative package to push in response to the Citizens United decision. We need to ensure they respond boldly.

West Hawaii Today Can't Seem to Recognize Kona's Own Students! WHY?
Dear West Hawaii Today (Reed Flickenger),
Emily McGeachy has been on the Dean’s list every semester and will be graduating Suma Cum Laude in May. She is getting a business degree in Equestrian Business from Rocky Mountain College in Billings Montana.
We would appreciate your recognition in West Hawaii Today, as she is born and raised here. Emily will be 20 years old when she graduates.
This is a major accomplishment for any kid from West Hawaii.
Thank you,
Susan and Tom McGeachy

Dear Sir,
We have sent our list of students, including those from your area, who made the Rocky Mountain College Dean's List every semester, and every semester the parents of one of our students informs us that your newspaper has failed to publish the notice.
We have tried to remedy this by having the parents contact you; by contacting you ourselves; and each semester the same routine ensues. We send out more than 300 of these to hometown newspapers and, for some reason, yours is the only one we have a problem with.
If there is a charge for publishing a notice of an outstanding accomplishment of a student from your area, you could advise us so we could advise the parents.
We are told someone at your newspaper (last year it was a B Jensen) has stated to the parents that the press release was not received, yet on two occasions, it was published after the parent contacted you, indicating to us that the problem was not from not receiving it.
We are sending the most recent list, in which Emily McGeachy, from Kona, is listed and we are copying her parents so they know you have received this, for the second time. The list is alphabetical, by state.
If there are any questions, please contact me.
Sincerely,
Dan Burkhart

After emails, long distance calls, etc... Today West Hawaii Today finally ran an announcement of Emily McGeachy on the Dean's list. 7 times on the Dean's list, 7 times West Hawaii Today (specifically Reed Flickinger) was notified, and Today after much ado it was run. 3 out of 7?? Is that good???
What about our Students?
West Hawaii Today has to be hammered into recognizing Kona's children for their educational accomplishments. Sad we parents have to fight for our children. The local newspaper sure isn't on board without alot of hassels. Let's hope West Hawaii Today isn't doing this to other children.

Convience does NOT trump Safety
The County created the problem of safety when they put in speed bumps on Ahikawa. I had one CRAZY lady call me at 10:00pm last night to rant on and on about safety. Well try living on Ahikawa or Ahulani. You are totally correct. there is a HUGE safety issue with the volume of cars now on Ahulani to avoid the Ahikawa speed bumps.
The reality is some 10 years back the County had plans for open 4 connector roads. This crazy lady sounds like a newbie to the neighborhood. What about the poor homeowners on Nana St? What about the poor homeowners on Ahulani? There is a real problem. It is called even traffic flow.
We had an Engineer from the mainland walk the entire road on Holu/ Keo Keo from Palisades to Coastview. His comment is there is NO I repeat NO sight problems on Keo Keo. The sight problems he saw was on the cross streets on Ahikawa.
The County has been in litigation for years, the judge (Ibarra) has made the decision to open this road as per the County plans. All of the people are waiting for this opening. One idiot is holding it up.
Please call Warren Lee and give him your opinion.

Warren Lee just as bad a Bruce McClure? Come on County of Hawaii
--------------------------------------------------------
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
Tuesday, Please feel free to Call Warren directly if you don't see action on Holu and Keo Keo St. These are your roads. They have junked up 7 speed bumps in 2 bottom blocks of Ahikawa. Now Ahulani has become a high speed freeway. Open ALL connectors and there won't be a need for these bumps. Open Holu- From highlands to palisades.
Warren Lee (Director, Hi Co. Dept. of Public Works) call 961-8341
or email wlee@co.hawaii.hi.us
Take action or pay the price.
Aloha, Susan
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Warren,
You knew there was a 30 day waiting period. What seems to be the problem? The residents of Kona Coastview, Kona Wonderview, Kona Highlands, and all of the subdivisons north of Highlands are all WAITING! Is it poor communication skills? Incompentance? or just torture for the west side paying a MAJORITY of the taxes that keep this County a float? I am sincerly disappointed. I heard such good things about you Warren, unfortunelty you are not living up to it.
Ladys and Gentlemen, Friends and Neighbors. This is Bruce McClure's replacement.
Same s***t different person.
Let's see if they open the road on Tuesday. When the only two guys in the County that know up from down can come back from vacation and make a few rocks disappear.
Sadly waiting for action.
Susan McGeachy
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aaron-It appears the road will not open until Tuesday, January 12 due to internal miscommunication. Altho not intended as an alibi, nevertheless, the absence of Stanley Nakasone and Ben Casuga(both on leave status) have not helped the communication situation. In addition, due to my personal oversight, I did not transmit the Director's 12/30/09 e-mail to HWY MAINT., as requested by HM at the 1/7/10 meeting, until noon today.
I apologize for my error. Please call if you have question.Aloha-Boby.
Bob Yunaba
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The road should be open the first working day after the 9th of january barring any unforseen emergencies.
Warren.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aloha Warren,
Are we still on schedule to Open Holu St. from Kona Coastview to Kona Palisades for 1/9/10? This was your last correspondence and I am assuming it is still on track. We would like to get a photo of the opening. What time are you planning on moving the rocks/ barrier?
We are also inquiring about the Opening of Holu St. to Kona Highlands? This will cut down some of Jake Jacobs problems on the corner of Kie Kie St. and even up the traffic flow.
There are 3 water mains on this connector road that belonged to the late Carl Matsumoto Water system. The lot was cleared years ago for the new road but Matsumoto’s water mains had to be removed. When our new water system went in 5 years ago, they never followed up with the opening of this road.
The more traffic can flow down various streets the smoother the traffic flow will be.
The speed bumps/humps will be an accident waiting to happen when the cars are speeding and become airborne. Especially on the steeper parts of Ahikawa and Ahulani.
7 speed bumps in 2 blocks is WAY too many! Please ask a qualified Engineer to review the entire subdivision and place them evenly.
Thank you for your follow up.

Susan. Sorry to disappoint you with the delay. We are not perfect but I understand there are a few.
Keep the faith. Warren.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear Warren,
We are not asking for perfection. Just consideration.
We will see your actions on Tuesday.
I have had 4 calls already. The public is not going to sit by for more B.S. delays.
They have to drive these roads daily.

Subject: Concerning Kona Coastview Subdivision faulty road planning Ahulani St/Holo Holo St. speedway/noise machine
Attention Please Warren Lee (Director, Hi Co. Dept. of Public Works)
Please take action and open up Holu and Keo Keo St. to ease up on the noise and traffic that has created a monster all because of bad planning with the County directors or whoever is responsible for more trashing of the Kona Coast and our subdivisions.
Most drivers on this side of Hualalai mountainside / above the Kona Airport are now using one road to enter and exit the lower Kona Coastview Subdivision and that road is Ahulani St. , the road where my home is located.
Since Ahikawa St. is now filled with speed bumps, all traffic avoids those bumps and heads over here on Ahulani St. to do their racing/driving up and down.
My name is Teresa Jean Aipia and I live in Kona Coastview Subdivision near the bottom of the road between Ahulani St./Nana St./HoloHolo St .
I built this house upon my property over 30 years ago with my family , raised my kids here and now my grandchildren ...... What was once a nice quiet area is now within the past year a very noisy speedway for loud engined vehicles speeding their way up and down and this has become a horrid nightmare
Only Ahulani St. is now bombarded with all the speed and noise driving us all crazy 24 hours a day.
I wear earplugs in the evening and still hear the noise of the vehicles who stream from a few subdivisions to bottle neck down here in front of my home to enter/exit using the Holo Holo St.
Please help us improve our area back to what was by opening up Keo Keo St. and Holu St.
Thank you for you time,
Teresa Jean Aipia

Now Ahulani has become a high speed freeway. Open ALL connectors and there won't be a need for these bumps. Open Holu- From highlands to palisades.
Warren Lee (Director, Hi Co. Dept. of Public Works) call 961-8341
or email wlee@co.hawaii.hi.us
Take action or pay the price.
Aloha, Susan

Someone in Kona Coastview is burning their trash at 12:00 midnight?
This is a Plead to all that live in the Coastview area. Please be on the look out for some careless rubish burner. We are all breathing toxic fumes at night when the fire is going. We will wake up and hunt you down. Call the Police and then let the neighbors linch you.
This is NOT a JOKE. We are serious. Let me know if you know who the guilty party is.
Thanks, Susan mcgeachy@hawaii.rr.com

South Kona Fires! Money or know How? Why is no one putting them out?

Hi fellow smoke inhalers,
The County of Hawaii is not putting out the south kona fires. As of 8am this morning they didn't even have any fire fighters on the scene. Please call your officials and ask, plead, or demand as your mood dictates that these fires not only be contained but also be put out. This experiment in our health needs to come to an end.
The county is pleading that there is a lack of resources so if you have time for more than one phone call, include the state in your efforts to get some attention for south kona.
I talked to civil defense and to the mayor's office this morning, and their phone numbers are 935-0031 and 961-8211, respectively. Let us see if we can't make as much noise as the fireworks did on New Year's eve.
Thank you for putting up with this mass emailing, I'll try not to abuse the priviledge.
Aloha, Emily Burt
