Wayne Carter

Susan,
I will be happy to attend your meeting. As I'm sure you realize, the democrats who run the senate and legislature in Honolulu will never relinquish their power and influence over the west side because we send them and our county reps too much money. They don't really care about us. It's all about the money and power and they control both. Remember the "golden rule" - he who has the gold will rule! They control our fate and it would take their vote to make the changes to the Hawaii constitution. They've been in power for over 30 years and they are not about to give any up. Our county reps don't have the guts to do anything about it or try to influence their democrat "parents" in Honolulu. Until we get a true 2 party system in Hawaii, we are at their mercy. To make changes must be made at the ballot box. Unfortunately, the citizens of our state who voted Linda Lingle in as governor dropped the ball when they didn't follow it up when voting for senate and legislature seats.
How ignorant was that?
I wish you much luck. Truth is, you are going to need it. Let us know when your meeting is scheduled.
Mahalo & Aloha from Paradise,
Wayne Carter

If we get a West Hawaii County, I know just what to call it:

Southern California West

I've lived here for over 30 years and I wouldn't move here now if I wasn't already here.

Ever since I got here, I've been trying to open people's eyes to the Lahainafication of Kona....well, I was wrong....they didn't even do it as well as Maui.

It's the GREED, the unbelievable GREED.

To paraphrase Rochelle Delacruz when she was on NPR talking about some mainlander's thoughts about that fiasco in Kealakekua, "I wonder why people come to Hawaii when the first thing they do when they get here is try to make it like where they came from?"

I certainly didn't move here for the "convenience" of Walmart and Costco, nor for the familiarity of Starbucks or McDonalds! Heck there was no such thing as Walmart, Costco or Starbucks back then, and McDonalds, disgusting as it is, at least served saimin.

I didn't move here hoping one day there would be several multiplex movie theatres. I thought it was great to have to drive all the way to Captain Cook to watch a movie in a quanset hut.

I didn't move here and miss mini malls full of franchises that are duplicated just a few blocks away.

I didn't move hear to drive a Hummer with tinted windows to write off from my taxes as a business expense.

When I got here, the mountain at the dump was a deep hole. If we'd had recyclying then, maybe it would still be a hole.

We didn't have road rage. Heck, there was only one traffic light.

But almost no one was interested in a sustainable economy. Oh no...Maui was the model! Build build build. Everything depends on tourists. Give the tourists what we think they want, cater to the lowest common denominator: GOLF GOLF GOLF. CONDO CONDO CONDO. SHOP SHOP SHOP!!!

Sadly maybe they were right...the tourists came. Some found it so much like home, they decided to stay and make it more like home.

And give those developers the MOON because THEY contribute to campaigns and provide CONSTRUCTION JOBS. And then we fill the new projects with more richies and provide plenty of low paying no/low benefit jobs for the locals of all flavors.

Now we have the fruits of this "PLAN".

I cannot see how it will help to split the Island. I relate to the sentiment because Kona has no public parks, no beach parks, no roads, nothing. We have Walmart, Kmart, Costco, Burger King, McDonalds, Taco Bell, Wendys, Subway, Starbucks, Chevron, Exxon, BP, Home Depot, Lowes, Borders, Safeway...Damn, it's so tragic!

But if you go to Hilo, you can see the rape of the land over there now too!

We need a new philosophy and new leaders. GREED is not a family value.

MORE MORE MORE MORE MORE MORE MORE MORE MORE MORE MORE MORE MORE MORE MORE MORE MORE

is not better.....it's worse.

I like the guy who blames Democrats! As if Republicans are better...ask the people in New Orleans about that.

Screw the Republicrats. The Big Island had it's chance when Keiko Bonk was running for Mayor. We borrowed a thousand dollars to give to her campaign...a thousand dollars! She was going to win, too, but the Republicrat developers were terrified she would be "bad for business" (she wasn't) and they pulled off a brilliant coupe --- they put up Mr. Civil Defense. Mr. "Why am I here?", Mr. Korean One Day--Japanese the next .... and who could argue that he isn't better than the previous criminal Yamashiro who REALLY sold the Big Island down the tubes making a tidy profit on every deal!

Pardon my rant.

Good luck Susan. I'm sure if you get a county, you will make it a better place than it would otherwise be.

Maybe I'll run for mayor.

But paradise is SO lost.

My, my aren't we bitter?

I guess the CAVE (citiens against virtually everything) people are not extinct after all. boo Hoo, boo hoo.

Why don't we all crawl in a hole and deny progress and growth entirely. We could all go back to horse and buggies
then we would not need paved roads.

Some people can not deal with reality.
Too bad, soooooo sad.
