This is very important to all Big Island residents and visitors because even if you do not have a boat or fish, you may just like to drive out and sit at the harbor entrance/break water to watch the waves or the dolphins, you may have that access denied to your family. The State is making plans to turn the harbor into what has been referred to as a "cash cow". Meaning: charge everyone for everything possible take the money and never bother to make the harbor usable or user friendly. This has gone on long enough! Let's get together, make demands and get some action. We live in a state surrounded by water, however it is very difficult to access the water-especially if you want to go by boat. The mainland and foreign visitors are appalled by the condition of things and the way the harbor is mismanaged, what a shame and travesty for all to see.

Hawaii Fishing and Boating Association has virtually saved the harbor from collapse! They reformed this organization three years ago when the harbor manager, Nancy Murphy, announced in a hastily called public meeting that DLNR was going to institute pay parking within two weeks. Eight weeks later, after seven harbor lessees mobilized the HF&BA, they had more than 1200 members signed up to oppose the pay parking plan. The plan was killed and the organization went on to accomplish many improvements in the harbor. Work is still on going. Everyone in the community benefits from their work. You can join HF&BA for free. Their annual meeting is Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at the Big Game Fishing clublhouse in Honokohau Harbor. See http://www.hawaiifishingandboating.com/ for details.
